Program Overview

Everything you need to know about Express Entry Canada

Express Entry is a points-based immigration system managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

Candidates create an online profile and are ranked against each other using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-ranking candidates are invited to apply for permanent residency through regular draws conducted by IRCC.

2026 Category-Based Selection Update: IRCC has updated its Express Entry priority categories for 2026. New priority categories include Foreign-trained Medical Doctors (with Canadian work experience), Scientific Researchers, Senior Managers (with Canadian experience), and Transport Professionals (pilots, aircraft mechanics, heavy equipment operators). French-language proficiency remains a priority with CRS cut-offs as low as 393. The Agriculture & Agri-food Occupations category has been retired. Standard CEC/FSWP draws now require CRS scores of 507 or higher.

At Bright Tomorrows Immigration Services, we help you build the strongest possible profile by optimizing your CRS score, identifying category-based draw opportunities, leveraging provincial nomination pathways that add 600 points, and ensuring your application is complete and accurate from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Express Entry Canada

As of March 2026, standard CEC/FSWP general draws require a CRS score of 507 or higher (typically 507-511). However, category-based draws for priority profiles can have significantly lower cut-offs. French-language proficiency draws have seen cut-offs as low as 393. New 2026 priority categories include Medical Doctors, Senior Managers, Scientific Researchers, and Transport Professionals. A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 points and virtually guarantees an ITA.

For 2026, IRCC has introduced new priority categories: Foreign-trained Medical Doctors (with Canadian work experience), Scientific Researchers, Senior Managers (with Canadian experience), and Transport Professionals (pilots, aircraft mechanics, heavy equipment operators). French-language proficiency (NCLC 7+) remains a high-priority category. The Agriculture & Agri-food Occupations category has been retired from Express Entry draws. Workers in retired categories should consider Provincial Nominee Programs as an alternative.

Once you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), IRCC currently processes most Express Entry applications in approximately 7 months. However, the time spent in the Express Entry pool waiting for an ITA varies depending on your CRS score, whether you qualify for category-based draws, and draw patterns. Processing times are estimates and subject to change. Current as of March 2026.

Yes. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points to your profile, virtually guaranteeing an ITA in the next draw. Many provinces have Express Entry-aligned streams that allow candidates in the federal pool to also apply for provincial nomination. PNPs are especially important in 2026 for applicants who do not qualify for category-based draws.

A job offer is not required for Express Entry, but a valid job offer supported by an LMIA can add 50 or 200 CRS points depending on the NOC category. Many successful applicants receive ITAs without a Canadian job offer.
