The Express Entry Landscape Has Changed
If you have been waiting for a general all-program Express Entry draw, the pattern in 2026 is clear: IRCC is not holding them. The last general draw took place on April 23, 2024, with a CRS cut-off of 529. Since then, every draw has been either program-specific or category-based.
This is not a temporary adjustment. It reflects a deliberate shift in how Canada selects permanent residents through Express Entry. Understanding this new reality is essential for building an effective immigration strategy.
2026 Draw Activity at a Glance
Through the end of March 2026, IRCC has conducted 18 Express Entry draws, issuing over 53,000 invitations to apply. The draws break down into several distinct categories.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC) Draws
CEC draws have been the workhorses of 2026, targeting candidates who already have skilled work experience in Canada. These draws are large, typically issuing 2,000 to 5,500 invitations, with CRS cut-offs consistently in the 507 to 511 range. The most recent CEC draw on March 31 sent 2,250 ITAs at a CRS score of 509.
For candidates with Canadian work experience and a CRS score above 510, a CEC draw invitation is realistic within the current cycle.
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Draws
PNP-specific draws continue on a regular basis, but the CRS thresholds are inherently high because a provincial nomination adds 600 points to a candidate's profile. PNP draw cut-offs in 2026 have ranged from 710 to 802.
The most recent PNP draw on March 30 issued 356 ITAs at a CRS of 802, a significant jump from the March 16 draw at 742. These numbers may appear intimidating, but they confirm that once you secure a provincial nomination, an invitation follows quickly.
French-Language Draws
French-speaking candidates continue to benefit from some of the lowest CRS thresholds in the Express Entry system. The March 4, 2026 French-language draw invited 5,500 candidates at a cut-off of just 397. For bilingual candidates or those willing to invest in French-language training, this pathway offers a significant advantage.
New Category-Based Draws in 2026
IRCC introduced several new category-based selection rounds in 2026, targeting occupations where Canada has acute labour market needs.
Physicians with Canadian work experience saw an extraordinary draw on February 19, where 391 candidates were invited at a CRS of just 169, one of the lowest thresholds ever recorded under Express Entry. Senior managers with Canadian work experience, researchers with Canadian work experience, and skilled military recruits are also new categories in 2026, each with their own targeted draws at lower CRS thresholds.
These category-based draws allow IRCC to pull candidates with specific skills out of the pool at much lower CRS scores, regardless of where they rank overall.
Why Provincial Nominations Are More Valuable Than Ever
With no general draws on the horizon and CEC draws locked in the 507 to 511 range, a provincial nomination has become one of the most powerful tools available to Express Entry candidates.
A nomination adds 600 CRS points to your profile. This means a candidate with a base CRS of 450, who would be far below the cut-off for any CEC draw, jumps to 1,050 and is virtually guaranteed an invitation in the next PNP-specific draw.
Several provinces are actively issuing nominations in 2026. Ontario's Human Capital Priorities stream regularly selects candidates from the Express Entry pool. British Columbia's Tech stream targets workers in technology occupations. Alberta's Express Entry stream selects candidates with strong ties to the province. Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick all maintain active nomination programs as well.
The key to a successful PNP application is demonstrating a genuine connection to the province, whether through work experience, a job offer, education, or family ties. Provinces want to nominate candidates who will settle and contribute to their communities long term.
The Express Entry Pool in March 2026
As of March 29, 2026, the Express Entry pool contained 230,186 candidates. The largest concentration is in the 451 to 500 CRS range, where 73,445 candidates compete for invitations. This crowded mid-range is exactly why a provincial nomination or category-based qualification makes such a difference.
Candidates above 500 are well positioned for CEC draws. Candidates below 450 without a provincial nomination or category qualification face a difficult path under current draw patterns.
Strategy for Getting Your ITA in 2026
Based on the current draw patterns, here is how to approach your Express Entry strategy.
If your CRS is above 510, you are competitive for CEC draws. Ensure your profile is up to date and your language test scores are current. An invitation could come within weeks.
If your CRS is between 450 and 510, focus on boosting your score. An additional language test to improve your CLB level, a one-year Canadian diploma, or securing a valid job offer can each add significant points. Alternatively, explore provincial nomination programs that align with your profile.
If your CRS is below 450, a provincial nomination is likely your fastest path to an ITA. Research which provinces are actively selecting candidates in your occupation and build your connection to that province through work, education, or community ties.
If you speak French or are willing to learn, French-language draws at CRS 397 represent the lowest entry point in the entire Express Entry system right now.
If you work in healthcare, senior management, research, or have military experience, check whether you qualify for one of the new 2026 category-based draws.
Looking Ahead to Q2 2026
IRCC has set a federal high-skilled landing target of 109,000 for 2026, down from previous years. With over 53,000 ITAs already issued in Q1, the pace is strong but the total cap means draws may become smaller or less frequent as the year progresses. Candidates who are ready to submit their profiles now have the best chance of being selected before the cap tightens.
