Program Overview

Everything you need to know about Express Entry Canada

Express Entry is a points-based immigration system managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

Candidates create an online profile and are ranked against each other using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-ranking candidates are invited to apply for permanent residency through regular draws conducted by IRCC.

2026 category-based selection: IRCC's 10 categories for 2026 are French-language proficiency; healthcare and social services; STEM; trades; education; transport (air pilots, aircraft mechanics and inspectors, avionics technicians, and automotive, truck and bus mechanics); physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience; and skilled military recruits. From January to October 2026, IRCC invited candidates through Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee Program and category-based draws, with no general (all-program) or Federal Skilled Worker draws. CEC cut-offs ranged from 507 to 523, and French-language draws went as low as 382.

Changes from November 3, 2026: IRCC is adding a Labour Market Integration factor to the CRS. Candidates receive points for either Canadian work experience (with extra points for work in eligible high-wage occupations) or a qualifying job offer in an eligible high-wage occupation, whichever gives more points, but not both. Job offers will no longer need an LMIA. IRCC will pause invitations for up to two weeks while it recalculates scores.

At Bright Tomorrows Immigration Services, we help you build the strongest possible profile by optimizing your CRS score, identifying category-based draw opportunities, leveraging provincial nomination pathways that add 600 points, and ensuring your application is complete and accurate from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Express Entry Canada

It depends on the draws you qualify for. From January to October 2026, IRCC held no general (all-program) or Federal Skilled Worker draws. Canadian Experience Class draws had cut-offs of 507 to 523, while category-based draws were often lower; French-language proficiency draws went as low as 382. A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 points, which usually puts a profile well above recent cut-offs, although an invitation is never guaranteed. The new CRS points that start on November 3, 2026 will change scores across the pool, so check our Express Entry draws page for the latest cut-offs.

IRCC has 10 categories for 2026. It renewed French-language proficiency (NCLC 7+), healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education and transport, and added physicians with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, researchers with Canadian work experience, and skilled military recruits. The transport category now covers air pilots, aircraft mechanics and inspectors, avionics technicians, and automotive, truck and bus mechanics (NOC 72600, 72404, 22313 and 72410). Separately, from November 3, 2026, the CRS will award new points for Canadian work experience in high-wage occupations and for qualifying job offers. If your occupation is not in a category, a Provincial Nominee Program may be an alternative.

After you apply for permanent residence, IRCC estimates about 6 months for Canadian Experience Class and about 7 months for Federal Skilled Worker and provincial nominee (Express Entry) applications (IRCC figures, October 2026). The time spent in the Express Entry pool waiting for an ITA varies with your CRS score, whether you qualify for category-based draws, and draw patterns. Processing times are estimates and change often; our processing times page shows IRCC's latest figures.

Yes. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points to your profile, which usually puts it well above recent draw cut-offs, although an invitation is not guaranteed. Many provinces have Express Entry-aligned streams that allow candidates in the federal pool to also apply for provincial nomination. PNPs are especially important in 2026 for applicants who do not qualify for category-based draws.

No. A job offer is not required, and IRCC removed CRS points for job offers on March 25, 2025. From November 3, 2026, a qualifying job offer in an eligible high-wage occupation earns 50, 70 or 100 CRS points, and the offer no longer needs an LMIA. Canadian work experience in a high-wage occupation can instead earn 20, 40 or 70 extra points; you receive whichever option gives more points, not both. Many candidates receive ITAs without a Canadian job offer.
