Canadian citizenship grants you the full rights and responsibilities of being Canadian, including the right to vote, hold a Canadian passport, and pass citizenship on to your children. Permanent residents who meet the eligibility requirements can apply for citizenship.
The citizenship process involves meeting physical presence requirements, demonstrating adequate knowledge of Canada and one of its official languages, filing taxes as required, and passing a citizenship test (for applicants aged 18 to 54). Applicants must also not be under any removal orders or have certain criminal prohibitions.

- Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days within the 5 years before applying
- Have filed Canadian income taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period
- Demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French (for ages 18-54)
- Pass the Canadian citizenship knowledge test (for ages 18-54)
- Not be under a removal order or have prohibitions due to criminal activity
- Not have had citizenship revoked in the past

Yes. Each day you were physically present in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a permanent resident counts as half a day, up to a maximum credit of 365 days. Only days within the 5 years before you sign your application are counted.

Yes. Canada fully recognizes dual citizenship. You do not need to give up your current citizenship to become a Canadian citizen. However, some other countries may not allow dual citizenship, so you should check the laws of your country of origin.
