Who counts in your family
- You
- Your spouse or common-law partner
- Your dependent children and your spouse’s or partner’s dependent children
- Count them even if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, or are not coming to Canada with you.
Who doesn’t need proof of funds
- Applicants under the Canadian Experience Class
- Applicants who are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer (both are needed), even under the Federal Skilled Worker or Federal Skilled Trades program
Keep your funds up to date in your profile anyway: you may be eligible for more than one program and you don’t know in advance which one you will be invited under.
What counts as funds
- Money you can legally access in Canada when you arrive, both when you apply and when the visa is issued.
- Not equity in real estate, and not money borrowed from another person.
- A joint account with a spouse who is coming with you counts. An account in your spouse’s name only may count if you prove you have access.
- Proof is an official letter from each bank on its letterhead: your name, outstanding debts, and for each account the number, date opened, current balance and average balance over the past 6 months.
Next step
If you have more than the minimum, list the full amount in your Express Entry profile. Read the Express Entry guide for the other requirements.
