How family size is counted

Count these people (IRCC, proof of financial support):

  • the visiting parents or grandparents the host will support (for example, both parents)
  • the host (the child or grandchild)
  • the host’s spouse (this may include a separated spouse) or common-law partner
  • the dependent children of the host and of their spouse or partner, whatever the custody or support arrangements
  • Super Visa holders in another letter of invitation from the host or their spouse that still applies
  • people the host or co-signer sponsored (or co-signed for) whose undertaking is still in effect

Example: a single host with no children inviting one parent is a family of 2. A host with a spouse and 2 children inviting both parents is a family of 6.

A dependent child is generally under 22 and has no spouse or common-law partner, or is older and has depended on their parents since before 22 because of a physical or mental condition.
